Absorbing CBD Orally with an Oil/Tincture

Every day we are asked by customers, "What is the best way to take our Revive CBD tinctures?" We advise people to put the tinctures/oils under the tongue for 2 to 5 minutes. Find out why here!

There are many questions people ask who are new to CBD.  Probably one of the most frequently asked questions is how to best take cannabidiol (CBD) tinctures.

When a tincture is simply swallowed only a small amount of the CBD content is actually absorbed to the point where it reaches the endocannabinoid system (ECS).  Some estimates are as low as 6% of the CBD actually reaches the ECS.

However, if the user will place the tincture under the tongue for 2 to 5 minutes, that amount is thought to significantly increase to as much as 36-50%!

There is a vein directly under the tongue known as the sublingual gland. When a substance CBD comes into contact with the sublingual gland it is directly absorbed into the bloodstream, which is referred to as sublingual consumption. Common sublingual consumption methods include CBD tinctures.

Because sublingual consumption is more direct, it impacts the body quicker than oral consumption and maintains higher availability, only being degraded from enzymes in the mouths saliva.

This is due to a phenomenon known as the first pass effect of the liver.  This is where a substance is altered by the liver (either enhanced or broken down). CBD is subjected to a significant first-pass effect;  a large proportion of the dose is excreted unchanged and unused.

So for this reason we often advise consumers to leave the product under the tongue for as long as possible (up to five minutes for best absorption).

How much should I take?

While there is not a definitive guide for dosing of CBD, most experts advise consumers to start relatively low and increase as needed.  Many users start at around 15-30mg, twice a day.  Some users find themselves using much more than this.  Still, it is important to note that we are not doctors and are not offering medical advice here!

Carrier Oils

The carrier oil selected for a CBD Tincture is also important when considering this first-pass effect, as well as other considerations.

Probably the best carrier oil, in our opinion, is Fractionated Coconut Oil which is also known as MCT oil.

Coconut oil naturally excels as a carrier oil for cannabidiol. Coconut Oil has little to no flavor, which makes it a great choice for making tinctures.  Coconut oil has natural antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties.

However, the best part about coconut oil is its abundance of saturated fats, particularly medium chain triglycerides (MCT). Medium chain triglycerides are smaller fat molecules which are easily absorbed by the body, directly through the liver. Fractionated coconut oil is simply just coconut oil which has had the longer fat molecules removed to isolate the medium chain triglycerides. For this reason, fractionated coconut oil is also known as MCT oil which is one of the best carrier oils for CBD.

Revive CBD now offers tinctures with a carrier oil of MCT
